State to post salaries of public school employees online

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KBAK/KBFX) State Controller John Chiang wants to add information about public school employees' salaries and benefits to a website.

"(This is) to make sure that we have more transparency in local and state finances," said Jacob Roper, spokesman for the office of State Controller.

Chiang sent a letter this week to all public school districts requesting the information by May 5. The State Controller would then add that information on to the state's public compensation website,

The site already posts compensation information about employees who work for a city, county or special district. It has been up and running since 2010.

Salaries of public employees and elected officials are a matter of public record.

"Generally speaking, it's fair game," said Rob Meszaros, spokesman for the Kern County Superintendent of Schools Office. "We believe in transparency here at the County Office of Education, and we'll be complying with the request."
