Stray bullet claims grandfather's life
BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KBAK/KBFX) A 65-year-old man was fatally shot in the head Friday night while relaxing on a sofa.
While the shooting happened in Fresno, the man's family is grieving in Bakersfield.
"He had just laid his granddaughter Riley down and came and sat down," said Bob Watt, who is Gerald Perry's son-in-law.
Watt said a bullet fired from an adjacent apartment ripped through the a glass door and killed his father-in-law.
Watt said his 12-year-old daughter Madison had just visited her grandfather in Fresno the day before.
"She told me that 'I hugged him a couple times, I don't know why, but I went back and hugged him again,'" said Watt.
Perry and his wife were visiting another granddaughter when the tragedy occurred.
Police arrested 30-year-old Lamont Smith, who they said negligently discharged a semiautomatic handgun from a nearby apartment.
Perry was a Vietnam veteran who spent most of his life in Fresno and Bakersfield.
