Downtown Bakersfield at the new federal courthouse, it was business as usual Tuesday, the first day of the shutdown.
Veterans groups Eyewitness News spoke with said their services haven't been impacted. The veterans' clinic was open for business.
In eastern Kern County, thousands of workers at Edwards Air Force Base have been furloughed.
Tuesday afternoon, Eyewitness News placed a called to the public information officer at the base to see what impact was being felt. A recorded message informed us that he had been placed on furlough.
Over at the China Lake Naval Base in Ridgecrest the results were not much better.
County Supervisor Mick Gleason represents residents in District 1. He is also the former executive officer at China Lake.
"My contacts are telling me we're going to lose about 300 jobs," Gleason said.
Gleason is hopeful that Congress and the president will get things fixed.
