Police said Lawless beat his girlfriend unconscious, tied her up and held her against her will for days. He then stabbed, choked, burned and repeatedly bit her, according to investigators.
Lawless pleaded "not guilty." Kern County Superior Court records show Lawless has a long history of arrests. One of the most bizarre happened in June of this year.
Members of a joint Bakersfield Police Department and Kern County Sheriff's Office task force conducted a prostitution-suppression operation on Union Avenue.
Undercover Officer Craig Checklenis spotted Lawless standing on the corner of 1st Street and Union Avenue dressed as a woman. Lawless had on makeup, a black and red lace top, black lace panties, earrings, necklaces and was wearing knee-high black boots.
Checklenis asked Lawless if he was working, and Lawless said, "Yes."
Lawless offered to perform a sex act on the officer for $25. He was taken into custody but bolted from the car and ran away. Police gave chase and Lawless was eventually caught.
In the most recent case, Lawless is being held on bail of $2 million.
