A member of a prominent farming family was in court for the first time Monday to answer to charges that include driving under the influence of alcohol.

John George Giumarra III entered the customary plea of not guilty at his arraignment.

He's facing a pair of misdemeanor DUI charges and a felony hit-and-run charge. He allegedly struck a cyclist, 32-year-old Angela Holder, in January on Golden State Avenue near F Street. Holder later died.

Police said Giumarra fled the scene, but witnesses were able to guide them to his nearby location.

Giumarra is a member of the family that runs Giumarra Vineyards.
