Westside Parkway update: Open to traffic by August

{A href=""}BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KBAK/KBFX) From the earth-movers to tractors and construction workers, there is plenty going on along the Westside Parkway.

Luis Topete, the lead engineer on the project, said Tuesday that the aim is to open the roadway by the first week of August.

Westside Parkway is a new east-west freeway. Construction started in early 2010 on Phase 2, which includes a six-lane freeway from Mohawk Street to Allen Road.

Bridges have been built at Coffee Road, Calloway Drive, Jewetta Avenue and at the Friant-Kern Canal, and paving appears complete.

Exit signs now mark roadways, sure to be filled with drivers looking to escape the congested roadways leaving downtown. Guardrails are being installed, and ramps are under construction.
