Caught on video: Cop tackles bat-wielding suspect outside police station

WEST COVINA, Calif. (WSET) -- Police in West Covina, California arrested a man carrying a baseball bat that walked up to the front lobby of the police department and started hitting the large glass windows.

Police said it happened around 10:15 a.m. on Monday.

They said three women were seated inside the lobby by the windows and immediately ran and entered a secured area when the man started hitting the glass.

As officers responded from within the police station, they said the suspect walked up to the entryway repeatedly swinging and hitting the glass entry doors, threatening to enter.

Police said an officer, who had been outside, saw what was happening and ran up to the suspect, tackling him to the ground.

Other officers then assisted in taking him into custody.

Police said the suspect had minor injuries from the fall and was taken to the hospital for treatment.

Christopher Rivas, 28, of West Covina was arrested and charged with assault with a deadly weapon and resisting arrest.

None of the women were hurt and the outer glass of the police department did not break from the impact strikes made by the suspect, police said.
