Scholarships offered, sponsors needed for Junior Wheelchair Sports Camp

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KBAK/KBFX) Scholarships are now available for Kern County's young people to attend the Junior Wheelchair Sports Camp, July 22-26 at the University of California, Santa Barbara.

Summer is a challenging time for young people with disabilities, and they often miss out on exercise and socialization with their friends, said Emma Perry of Independent Living Center of Kern County.

To qualify for scholarships, a person must be between the age of 6 and 19 and:

  • Write the young person's story (single page) and explain how they would benefit from the experience. If possible, the story should be written by the youngster or they can draw a picture.
  • Submit the story (and picture) by May 15, along with child and parent's names, child's age and disability, number of people in the household, and annual household income.
  • Mail application to ILCKC, Attn: Christine, 5251 Office Park Drive 200, Bakersfield 93309.

Sponsors are also needed to offset costs of hotel, food and gas.
