Expect early entry for Black Friday shopping; Cyber Monday should be big

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KBAK/KBFX) - Black Friday shopping is starting earlier than ever this year, with major retailers, including Kohl's and Macy's opening the doors on Thanksgiving Day.

The companies have announced the deals will be open to the public starting at 8 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 28.

Consumer experts say encroaching on the family holiday is crucial to every store's budget. They say economic uncertainty and a later-than-usual Thanksgiving is making retailers nervous about how much people are going to spend.

While stores are planning big online sales discounts, FedEx expects this year's Cyber Monday to be the busiest day in its shipping history. This year, Cyber Monday falls on Dec. 2. FedEx expects to ship more than 22 million packages.

The global package shipping company says that e-commerce is growing worldwide, at three- to four-times the rate of traditional brick-and-mortar stores. FedEx says it plans to hire tens of thousands of seasonal, temporary hires to help handle the surge in holiday shipments.
