BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KBAK/KBFX) – A young Bakersfield woman is among the newest contestants on CBS' "Survivor."

Lauren O’Connell hails from Bakersfield but has been living in Waco, Texas, where she recently graduated from Baylor University. She played soccer at Baylor and graduated with a degree in medical humanities.

“I think that Bakersfield has really prepared me to be on ‘Survivor,’ because it’s such an incredible community where people really cheer on the accomplishments of others,” she said during a promotional interview provided Thursday by CBS.

“Survivor” is embarking on its 38th season with the theme “Edge of Extinction.”

“SURVIVOR continues to reinvent itself with new energy, and this season we’ve added a new secret game-changing twist,” host Jeff Probst said in a news release. “After being voted out, players will be faced with a decision to either go home or go to the Edge of Extinction where they will be pushed further than ever before for a chance to get back in the game.”

The new season of “Survivor” premieres at 8 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 20, on KBAK-CBS.
