UPDATE: Bakersfield Memorial Hospital announced power was restored to it at 9:50 a.m., but the external phone system remains down.

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KBAK/KBFX) -- Bakersfield Memorial Hospital is operating on an emergency generator Wednesday morning because of a power outage, according to Dignity Health.

The hospital says patient care is not impacted, but the hospital’s external phone systems are not working.

An alternative phone has been made available for patient updates at (661) 327-1792.

A Pacific Gas and Electric Co. spokeswoman says more than 1,400 customers were initially left without power at 5 a.m. because of equipment failure. She said all but two customers, including Memorial Hospital, had power restored within an hour.

She anticipated the hospital will be operating on normal power by 1 p.m.
