BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KBAK/KBFX) — The Kern County Department of Public Health is urging everyone to know their numbers, for blood pressure and cholesterol, that is.
Tuesday, the department launched its new program #KnowYourNumbers.
The pilot program is starting in Buttonwillow, with the goal of expanding countywide by next year.
Residents got free health screenings. They will also get nutrition and fitness classes over a 12-week period.
#KnowYourNumbers is a three-step program to fighting chronic diseases in Kern County.
"It's extremely important, and the problem is we kind of put it aside and we don't pay much attention," said Regina Houchin of the Buttonwillow school board. "We hear about it, but we don't really follow up with it, so this is an opportunity for them to know their numbers and to get it here locally."
Nutrition and fitness classes will be held every Tuesday and Thursday night at the Buttonwillow Recreation Center.
