Serial scam artist returns to court facing new charges
BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KBAK/KBFX) —
A man long known in Bakersfield contracting circles as a fraud is standing trial this week, fighting charges that he ripped off yet another client.
Prosecutors say 62-year-old Barry Hanner defrauded a Bakersfield couple, unlawfully taking money or personal property while doing business as an unlicensed contractor.
If convicted, the alleged victims in the current case would be Hanner's sixth. That's not counting any contractor who has a real license Hanner used without permission.
Multiple calls Thursday to Hanner's attorney, Arturo Revelo, were not returned before this publication.
Eyewitness News has fielded complaints about Hanner in the past, shining a light on his previous criminal activity.
Hanner has benefited greatly from early-releases from custody. Three times, prosecutors say, he committed a felony within five years of leaving prison.
The State Contractors License Board has issued Hanner seven citations in the past for working without a license.
