Reece Yaksitch will be competing in the 2017 State Games of America.

Yaksitch started figure skating at 6 years ago during her birthday party and has continued skating ever since.

"You can get hurt, but if you have a positive mindset, it just helps you get through some of those rough times," she said.

She has been taking lessons at the Adventist Health Ice Center for the past four and a half years and has already skated in nearly 10 statewide competitions.

The State Games of America are an Olympic-styled event that includes figure skating, hockey and softball.

It includes a competition for skaters across the nation who have placed top three in their group.

Her skating coach, Hayleigh Weldin, said Yaksitch is exceeding expectations.

The games will be held in August in Grand Rapids, Michigan.

Yaksitch says this is just the beginning of her career.

"I know if I continue to skate, I will get better and better, and I may go to another competition like this, maybe even the Olympics," Yaksitch said.
