Bakersfield skiers and snowboarders may soon have nearby access to white slopes and stunning views.

Alta Sierra Ski Resort is seeing more snow this week than it has in the past five years and is hoping to open soon.

Brian Kelly, general manager, said the resort in Wofford Heights is accessible to Bakersfield residents.

“We’re within an hour and a half of Bakersfield. You know, you can come up, you can have fun, you can go home, and pass out,” Kelly said.

The winter wonderland in the Kern River Valley offers opportunities to ski, snowboard, and even go snow tubing.

“Everything from, you know, black-diamond runs to just like a bunny hill for learning,” Kelly said.

Last year, the resort opened for only two days due to insufficient snowfall and it didn’t open at all the four years prior.

Garro Ellis, one of the owners of the resort, said 2.5 feet of snow would be good enough to allow them to open.

This year, the resort already has accumulated 10 inches and that is lifting Kelly’s and Ellis’ hopes to open on Sunday.

If they receive the anticipated amount of snowfall, they expect the peak season to hit at Christmas time.

Ellis said with the promised snowfall this year, anywhere between 400 and 800 people could hit the slopes on any given day.

In anticipation of the opening, a job fair is scheduled 9 a.m. to noon Saturday at the resort.
