Going back to school can be stressful for both parents and students.

“Not ready to wake up early in the morning and get back into the homework routine," said Janea Benton, a mother of three.

But, luckily, help is available.

"I feel very grateful to have this event," said Benton.

Saturday, the city of Bakersfield's Parks and Recreation Department partnered with local skating company Rezavor to host a back-to-school skateboard jam. The event was open to the public and back-to-school necessities, such as backpacks and even haircuts, were provided.

Steven Everett, Rezavor's co-founder and the event organizer, said he enjoys giving back.

"We felt that we needed to give back to the community, and we figured that so many schools are growing in the district and the in the city that the need for this is there," said Everett.

For parents rushing to finish their last-minute preparations, the convenience of being able to attend events like these is key.

And Everett said he hopes this is just the beginning and that he can continue to combine giving back to the community with the hobby that he loves.

"We're looking to expand. It'd be beautiful if we could do it all throughout the state of California," he said.
