The community gathered Wednesday to celebrate the African-American holiday Kwanzaa at the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Community Center.

Kwanzaa started Dec. 26 and ends Jan. 1. Each day has a corresponding theme and principal.

Faheemah Salahud-Din, founder of First and Always Melanin, said the celebration helps bring the community together.

"Kwanzaa is an event created for black people who live in the United States to link us to our ancestors in the African diaspora," said Salahud-Din. "It is a modern-day celebration of a very old African tradition."
