Bakersfield officer shoots, kills man during response to domestic violence call

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KBAK/KBFX) – An officer fatally shot a man overnight while responding to a domestic violence call in southwest Bakersfield.

Officers were dispatched around 11:20 p.m. Sunday to Hahn Avenue, near New Stine Road and Wilson Road, when a witness reported hearing an assault inside an apartment.

Police said the man had a gun when he came to the door and confronted officers. One officer shot the man, later identified by the coroner as 21-year-old Christopher Alexander Okamoto.

Police said a woman and infant were inside the apartment at the time.

The officer who shot the man will be placed on routine administrative leave pending an internal review of the shooting.
