BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KBAK/KBFX) – The Bakersfield Police Department has put out a call for help in a 40-year-old cold case.

Linda Sue Adkins, 28, was found dead in a field off Rosedale Highway near Highway 99 on Jan. 16, 1979.

No arrests were made in her murder for several years. Then, a serial killer caught in Texas confessed to killing Adkins.

Henry Lee Lucas’ confession was deemed credible at the time. But, the Bakersfield Police Department said law enforcement officials later determined Lucas falsely confessed to a number of murders throughout the country.

Lucas, serving a sentence for murder in Texas, died in prison in 2001.

Bakersfield police detectives reviewed the Adkins murder within the last year and, in light of advances in investigative technology and Lucas’ discredited confessions, they’ve decided to reopen the case.

There is no statute of limitations for murder. Anyone with information that can help bring justice to Adkins’ family is asked to call Detective Christina Abshire at (661) 326-3559.
