Plainclothes deputy shot at, uninjured

A plainclothes Kern County deputy was shot at Wednesday afternoon in southeast Bakersfield but was not hurt.

The deputy was in an unmarked car on Watts Drive when someone started shooting at him. The Bakersfield Police Department, which is the investigating agency, said the deputy reported hearing “numerous gunshots.”

More officers responded and arrested 66-year-old Michael Beilby, who was found with a gun. They said Beilby fired the shots from a nearby residential property.

Police didn’t comment on a suspected motive.

The deputy’s name was withheld.
