Bass Pro Shops announced Wednesday that it's moving forward with its long-anticipated Bakersfield store.

The 100,000-square-foot store will anchor an 800,000-square-foot mixed-use retail development at Highway 99 and Hosking Avenue.

The Springfield, Missouri-based company didn't say when construction would begin or when the store would open. Bass Pro Shops typically include a boat showroom, a large aquarium and water features, artifacts and hundreds of trophy fish and wildlife mounts.

Bass Pro Shops said it anticipates hiring as many as 300 people for the Bakersfield store.

The Woodmont Co. is developing the larger project at the northeast corner of the 99-Hosking interchange, where a $21 million roadways upgrade was recently completed.

This will be the fifth Bass Pro Shops in California, joining Manteca, San Jose, Rancho Cucamonga and Rocklin.

“We are very excited to be the lead anchor tenant for this innovative new development that is sure to have such a positive impact on Bakersfield, one of the fastest-growing cities in the United States,” Bass Pro Shops founder and CEO Johnny Morris said in a news release. “Our store will be a tribute to the great sporting tradition and heritage of the region and a celebration of the sporting men and women of California.”
