BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KBAK/KBFX) – Blasting operations are scheduled to take place around 3 p.m. Tuesday for the Isabella Lake Dam Safety Modification Project, according to the Lake Isabella Dam Task Force.

Both directions on Highway 155 will be closed for a short period during the blasting.

The dam was built in the 1950s, and the Army Corps of Engineers began a safety modification study more than a decade ago to address seismic, hydrologic and seepage concerns.

The engineering and design phase for the project lasted several years, wrapping up in 2016.

In September 2017, the Army Corps of Engineers awarded a $204 million contract for Phase II dam and spillway modifications.

The project is expected to be complete in 2022.
