BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KBAK/KBFX) -- A young child was found dead after a fire was knocked down shortly after midnight in an east Bakersfield storage area.

Wednesday, a memorial was placed for the child. There were notes and balloons dedicated to a little girl named "Maddie."

Kern County Fire Engineer Roberto Figueroa said the facility that burned served as a storage area. He said it was fully engulfed in flames when the crew arrived.

The area is located near a vacant market off Sterling Road near Niles Street.

The Fire Department said a family of five was squatting in the storage area.

Officials said three family members suffered burns and were taken to the hospital, in addition to the child who was found dead. Figueroa estimated the child's age at 4 or 5.

The fire carried over and burned some of a nearby house.

Red Cross was on scene assisting.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
