Christmas is coming early for the Bakersfield Animal Care Center.

This is the second year the staff put up stockings on all the cat and dog kennels.

They are asking visitors to stop by and fill them with treats and toys for the animals.

"They deserve some love, too, so it's just a fun way to expand the season," Executive Director Julie Johnson said.

Johnson said this is also a great opportunity to raise awareness of all the local animals that need a loving home.

She said there are currently about 150 animals who need homes.

When you adopt a dog or cat, you will also be able to take home their stocking.

"We are really hoping that all these animals get to go home with a brand new stocking filled with goodies."

Johnson said even if you are not looking to adopt, she hopes people come and fill the stockings.

You can drop off donations leading up to Christmas.

Johnson said they are also looking for 100 more stockings, so new animals that are brought in can also get holiday gift.

The City of Bakersfield Animal Care Center is located at 201 S. Mt. Vernon Ave.

It is open Tuesday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
