City of Bakersfield agrees to settlement with the family of Jorge Ramirez
BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KBAK/KBFX) —
The family of Jorge Ramirez has agreed to terms on a $400,000 settlement with the city of Bakersfield, according to City Attorney Virginia Gennaro.
Ramirez was killed in 2013 during a gunfight between police and a fugitive suspect named Justin Bryan, who died in the shooting. An officer also suffered injuries.
Ramirez was a police informant who reportedly helped police find Bryan. He was unarmed at the time he was shot.
No money has changed hands yet, as the family is still deciding how to split the money for the children.
The Ramirez family was highly critical of the investigation that followed the shooting, strongly asserting the death was avoidable, if not intentional. They have been a regular presence at police protests ever since.
