Coroner's office releases name of pedestrian hit, killed by police car

The Kern County coroner's office on Tuesday released the name of a man struck and killed Monday morning by a Bakersfield police car on Highway 58.

Edgar Rodriguez, 30, was in the slow lane of the freeway when Officer Keith Daril Schlech hit him.

The California Highway Patrol said the crash happened just before 5 a.m., and the pedestrian was wearing dark clothing.

The collision occurred when the officer was responding to a call in the area of Oswell Street and preparing to exit the freeway, according to the CHP.
