A dead person was found in a stolen vehicle Tuesday morning after a California Highway Patrol officer conducted a routine traffic stop for speeding on Highway 65 at James Road.

The officer discovered the SUV had been reported as stolen out of Los Angeles County, according to the Kern County Sheriff's Office.

A dead male passenger was found in the vehicle, and two other male occupants were detained. The Sheriff's Office, which has taken over the homicide investigation, didn't say if the occupants were adults or juveniles.

The dead person appeared to have suffered an injury, the Sheriff's Office said.

Hwy. 65 was closed from Merle Haggard Drive to Lerdo Highway but reopened shortly after 10 a.m.
