Mother dog who risked her life to save puppies from fire in need of home

Rubia, a dog injured in the Cottonwood Fire in south Bakersfield, Calif., is seen in a photo provided Wednesday, Oct. 11, 2017, by Marley's Mutts Dog Rescue.

Rubia is just a few years old, but she has already lived through unimaginable trauma.

She and her puppies were living in a horse stable on Cottonwood Road when a fire ripped through their home Monday.

Robbie Miller with Marley's Mutts Dog Rescue found Rubia, badly burned, without her babies in the rubble.

Miller said Rubia tried everything she could to make it out alive with her puppies. Suffering from smoke in her lungs, the concerned mother stayed with them, even after she lost her puppies in the fire.

Marley's Mutts is nursing her back to health and searching for a forever home.

"She is a hero," Miller said. "I mean, she tried to do everything she could, to almost die for your puppies, to die for something beside yourself, I think only a dog could do it."
