A group announced Wednesday that it has picked up more than 2,700 bags worth of trash from downtown Bakersfield streets since the start of April.

The Downtown Street Ambassadors collect litter to beautify the heart of the city.

"This is a positive indicator that not only are the Downtown Street Ambassadors to be commended for their hard work,” former Mayor Harvey Hall said in a news release, and, “those who live, work, and visit downtown appear to be disposing of their trash properly. It is very encouraging to see such success!”

The trash is collected from 17th to 22nd streets and from F to M streets.

The program, which also provides transitional job experience, was created by a collaboration of the Downtown Business Development Corp., Bakersfield Homeless Center, Garden Pathways, The Mission at Kern County and Keep Bakersfield Beautiful.
