Family identifies man killed in Arvin shooting

Ismael Gutierrez, 21, who was shot and killed in Arvin, Calif., early Sunday, Dec. 17, 2017, is seen in a photo provided by his family.

Family and friends have identified the man killed in an early morning shooting in Arvin as 21-year-old Ismael Gutierrez.

Gutierrez had been celebrating his 21st birthday with family and friends the night before he was killed.

Officers were called out around 3 a.m. on Sunday after a friend called the police and told them Gutierrez and another woman had been shot and injured. They were both taken to the hospital, where Gutierrez later died.

His family is still trying to process the loss of one so young.

His aunt, Bea Cruz, said the tragedy is knowing that they'll never get to see Gutierrez again.

"I'll never get to spend another birthday with him. I'll never get to go to another family reunion with him. I'll never get to tell him that I loved him," said Cruz.

However, the family is grateful that he was able to spend his birthday with them.

The family said they are not aware of anyone who did not like Gutierrez, and his cousin, Francisco Padilla, said he believes the shooting was random.

"Some criminal just shot him for no reason, took his life at a young age," said Padilla.

Cruz is still processing that her nephew is no longer around.

"I just don't understand the mentality of the youth these days, what triggers them to get to this point where they shoot somebody that they don't even know," said Cruz.

Authorities have no suspect information at this time.

Anyone with information is asked to contact the Arvin Police Department at (661) 854-5583.
