The family of 5-year-old Emily Guillen-Casillas said she would light up any room and was always smiling.

Guillen-Casillas died Wednesday afternoon after being hit by a car on Harris Road near California Spring Drive.

Her grandmother, who family identified as 53-year-old Maria Guillen, was hit and hospitalized. Family said she is expected to live, but she lost a leg and has to undergo more surgery.

The Panama-Buena Vista Union School District confirms Guillen-Casillas went to Roy W. Loudon Elementary School.

Her uncle, Jose Guillen-Hernandez, said she was walking home from the bus stop with her grandmother.

"My mom always comes to pick her up," he said. "I'm in shock. I woke up this morning, and I wanted to just be a dream, but it's a reality. It's real. It's painful."

Police said it appears the woman who hit them lost control of her car. They said she is in her 40s and was not hurt in the crash.

Police said she was taken to the hospital from the scene because she had a previous medical condition.

Why she swerved into the sidewalk and hit the two is still under investigation.

"I'm waiting for answers," Guillen-Hernandez said.

The school district said counselors are at the school to help students and staff cope with the loss.

The family has created a GoFundMe account.

Anyone with information helpful to the investigation into this crash is asked to call police at (661) 327-7111.
