A vacant apartment was consumed by raging flames Tuesday night in east Bakersfield.

Firefighters said they were returning from a previous call around 10 p.m. when they noticed a building at Gage and Jefferson streets completely engulfed in fire.

Crews worked quickly and had to evacuate people from nearby homes.

Firefighters said they've responded to multiple incidents at this building over the last month.

Witnesses told firefighters a person was seen coming out of the building shortly before the fire began.

Firefighters said arson investigators have been called out to the area.
