Officials on Wednesday held a ceremony to break ground on the first segment of the Centennial Corridor project.

The new section of freeway will connect the Westside Parkway to Highway 58. The aim is to eventually provide a continuous east-west freeway through all of Bakersfield.

The first phase is the Kern River Bridge Improvements Project. It's a $41 million construction project and is expected to begin at the end of summer.

The project will widen two existing bridges and build two new ones.

To this point, the Centennial Corridor project has been in planning, property-acquisition and demolition phases.
