BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KBAK/KBFX) – A local group is calling on the community to help knit or crochet poppies in time for Veterans Day.

What the Knit! Guild is drawing inspiration from Armistice Day in England, where handmade poppies drape from the Tower of London and blend into a panoply of ceramic poppies.

The local group has collected thousands of poppies, but they’re looking for more.

The group says all handmade poppies will include a leaf displaying the name of a fallen service member. The poppies will be displayed at the Kern Veterans Memorial off Truxtun Avenue.

The group asks people to drop off poppies to 4609 New Horizon Blvd., Ste. 3, and use black yarn for the center and any shade of red when making the poppy. Submissions will be accepted until Oct. 30.
