A man was sentenced Thursday in Kern County court to 18 years to life in prison for murdering a stranger in 2015.

Guadalupe Ruiz was convicted last month of second-degree murder.

He'll also spend an extra three years in prison because of priors.

Ruiz, along with his accomplice, Quinton James, went up to Abel Prendiz and began to attack him in 2015. Prendiz was a stranger to both men.

Ruiz ultimately kicked Prendiz in the head with a steel-toe boot, causing Prendiz to a die a few weeks later, according to the Kern County District Attorney's Office.

James pleaded guilty to one count of voluntary manslaughter.
