City of Delano proclaims February Safely Surrendered Baby Awareness Month
BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KBAK/KBFX) —
The City of Delano declared the month of February as Safely Surrendered Baby Awareness Month on Wednesday.
So far 63 babies have been safely surrendered in Kern County since 2006 including 6 last year, according to the Department of Human Services.
The Safely Surrendered Baby Law gives new parents a chance to voluntarily give their child to the state within three days of its birth safely and confidentially. The law was created as a means to dimish the amount of abandoned baby deaths. It also makes it easier for a parent to surrender a baby who might otherwise abandon their baby in an unsafe place.
The goal today help spread awareness about the law and to educate the community about their options.
The Kern County Board of Supervisors issued their own declaration about the law last month.
