BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KBAK/KBFX) – Two people suspected in a “large amount” of mail thefts in the Rosamond area have been arrested, according to the Kern County Sheriff’s Office.

Austin Smith and Vanessa Navaro, both 24, were found Feb. 15 in the area of Janine Avenue in Rosamond.

The Sheriff’s Office said Smith was distraught when he was contacted by deputies, and he allegedly refused to exit a vehicle. The Sheriff’s Office said Smith was smoking methamphetamine in the vehicle and was calling family to say goodbye.

Deputies eventually used a pole to break the car’s window, and they got Smith to surrender.

In the vehicle, deputies found more than 100 blank checks, credit cards, tax forms, birth certificates and peoples’ identification cards, mostly for people from Lancaster.

Smith, who was on probation for weapons charges and assault, had also been wanted on outstanding arrest warrants.
