Kern County Animal Services is one of nine nationwide finalists for a wildcard slot in a $350,000 grant competition.

The 2018 Innovation Showdown is backed by the Petco Foundation, American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals and other animal welfare groups intent on finding lifesaving innovations.

Two finalists for the grant -- Front Street Animal Shelter and Hearts Speak -- have already been picked to compete, and the KCAS is vying to be the third. Voting among the wildcard finalists is now open online.

Voting ends the afternoon of April 9.

KCAS said it would use the grant money to create a vocational program for Lerdo jail inmates to care for young kittens in an effort to save these kittens from euthanasia. The program would be called LION -- Lerdo Inmate Orphan Nursery.
