BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KBAK/KBFX) – The body of Armando Gallegos, a correctional officer who worked at a prison in Delano, has arrived at a funeral home in Visalia.

Officers from multiple agencies paid tribute to Gallegos with an escort Monday from the coroner's office in Bakersfield.

Gallegos, 56, died Sept. 14. He had been injured months ago when he and another officer were attacked by a dozen inmates.

The California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation said it previously recommended attempted homicide charges for seven of the involved inmates.

A CDCR spokesman said last week that it was too soon to draw a distinct line between the officer’s death and the attack, citing the need for the coroner’s exam.

The coroner hasn’t released the results of its exam.
