A Kern County judge sentenced a man Tuesday to serve a 50-years to life prison term.

Gabriel Verdugo Jr. was found guilty in November of last year of shooting and killing 30-year-old Elvis Garcia-Gonzalez back in 2015.

Verdugo was located and arrested in June of last year in Mexico and later brought back to Kern County by U.S. Marshals.

Garcia-Gonzalez was a decorated combat veteran who worked in Bakersfield and Porterville to help veterans find civilian employment.

Authorities believe the shooting was sparked by an argument the pair had outside of a bar.

The judge also sentenced Verdugo Jr. to 25-year sentence for the murder of Gonzalez and an additional 25-year sentence for the use of a firearm during the murder.
