A man accused of having bomb-making materials made his first court appearance Thursday.

Ronald James McVay pleaded not guilty to making and having a destructive device.

Police arrested him Tuesday on an unrelated matter, but hours later his family members say they found suspicious items belonging to him and drove those items to the police headquarters to be examined.

Those items prompted a call to the bomb squad, and a downtown street was shut down most of the morning.
