Driver shot, killed by officer in Delano

The driver of a vehicle that accelerated towards an officer was shot and killed in an officer-involved shooting Sunday, according to the Delano Police Department.

Officers were called to investigate a suspicious vehicle in the alley off the 2200 block of Norwalk Street.

Officers were approaching the vehicle when the driver accelerated towards an officer, according to the Police Department.

The officer fired his gun in self-defense, the Police Department said.

A passenger got out and ran to a nearby home. After about an hour of negotiations, the passenger was taken into custody.

The officer has been placed on administrative leave while the shooting is investigated.

The Police Department didn't identify either the driver or his passenger.
