The man fatally shot the morning of New Year's Eve by a Delano officer has been identified as 32-year-old Ernie Macias, of Earlimart.

He was shot during a police investigation into a suspicious vehicle in an alley off Norwalk Street.

Police said officers were approaching the vehicle when the driver, Macias, accelerated towards an officer. The officer fired his gun in self-defense, police said.

A passenger was taken into custody. The officer was placed on administrative leave while the shooting is investigated.

Macias' family said Thursday they're grief-stricken over the death of their only brother.

"His loss of what every one of us has been hard," said sister Christina Mariscal. "It's taken us in shock."

The family created a GoFundMe page for funeral expenses.
