New parking canopies at Amtrak station will provide electricity
BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KBAK/KBFX) —
Amtrak unveiled four new solar parking canopies at the Bakersfield station on Thursday morning.
The solar panels on the canopies will produce more than 260,000 KWH per year.
“It’s an exciting day for us, the city of Bakersfield,” Andrae Gonzales, city councilman, said. “By adding additional solar panels as well, we’re able to save taxpayer dollars by being able to provide electricity for the Convention and Visitors Bureau.”
There are also four charging stations for electric vehicles.
The parking lot has 71 new spaces to accommodate 63 vehicles, five handicap spots and three motorcycle slots.
The project cost nearly $1.9 million and was paid for through funds from Public Transportation Modernization, Improvement, and Service Enhancement Account and Transit System Safety, Security, and Disaster Response Account.
