Man dead after an officer-involved shooting in south Bakersfield

UPDATE: The Bakersfield Police Department on Sunday, Nov. 5, identified the officer who shot the suspect as Warren Martin, who is the son of Chief Lyle Martin.

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KBAK/KBFX) -- A man is dead after being shot by an officer in south Bakersfield.

A pair of officers were making a routine traffic stop around 10:47 p.m. Saturday on the 1800 block of Planz Road.

The passenger from the car took off on foot, police said.

During the foot chase, the officer-involved shooting occurred.

The suspect was taken to a hospital, where he later died.

The officer who fired his weapon has been placed on administrative leave pending an investigation.
