UPDATE (3:45 p.m., Tuesday, Jan. 22): The Kern County coroner's office has identified the driver as 47-year-old Kenny Brian Robbins, of Maricopa.

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KBAK/KBFX) – A deadly crash had traffic at a crawl Tuesday morning on Highway 166 near Maricopa.

A pickup crashed into a big rig around 4:45 a.m. on the highway east of Basic School Road.

A California Highway Patrol officer on scene said the pickup’s driver, a 47-year-old man from Maricopa, was killed, and his passenger suffered minor to moderate injuries.

The officer said the big rig driver had attempted a U-turn on Hwy. 166 when his brakes locked up. He’d been broken down, blocking both lanes of traffic for 15-20 minutes with warning cones out, when the pickup came along and hit the stalled tractor-trailer.
