An SUV crashed early Friday morning with a big rig at Highway 43 and Panama Lane.

Kern County Fire Battalion Chief Sean Fraley said it took them nearly an hour from the call time to free the SUV's driver. He said the driver was unconscious but had good vitals.

The California Highway Patrol said the semitruck driver, who is from Nebraska, was heading north on 43 when he stopped and backed his truck onto Panama Lane. The SUV's driver, 35-year-old Lance Stephens, of Taft, was also going north on 43 when he came upon the truck that was partially blocking both lanes of the highway.

The CHP said Stephens suffered major injuries in the crash.

The CHP said it was foggy at the time of the crash, which was around 4 a.m. But, the CHP didn't explicitly say if Stephens' visibility was affected by the fog.
