Get rid of those outdated strings of incandescent indoor Christmas lights and get new LED lights – for free.

Pacific Gas & Electric Co. is hosting a swap, in conjunction with the Home Depot and the Bakersfield Association of Retarded Citizens (BARC) for customers to exchange up to three strands of incandescent indoor holiday lights for up to three strings of 33-foot LED strands, while supplies last.

The exchange takes place at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Home Depot, 8700 Rosedale Highway.

LED lights use 75 percent less energy than incandescent lights, emit very little heat and are made with epoxy lenses, which are more resistant to breakage. Plus, the LED strings could still be in use 40 holiday seasons from now.

The old, incandescent strings will be donated to BARC and recycled.
