BAKERSFIELD, Calif. — In Bowie, Texas, over 700 horses were up for auction, where they could possibly be so sold to kill pen bidders and slaughter houses. Tahlia Fischer, Director and Founder of All Seated in a Barn, was there. Fischer sent out a call-to-action, asking for donations to help buy these animals.
The community did not disappoint. Thousands of dollars came pouring in after Fischer posted a few videos asking for help.
We got the whole back end of the auction and some from the first day. Now it’s just more of a plight to get funds for water containers, panels, and feed but we got them.
Vet visits, food, water and board for one horse at the non-profit costs about $250 a month. So, rescuing 38 horses and 25 donkeys starts to add up. But saving horses and donkeys from kill pens and slaughterhouses is worth it for the organization.
Fischer shares that lame horses are not the only one’s you’ll find in a kill pen. Anyone can drop off any horse, from ponies and thoroughbreds, to pregnant mares.
Though there are no horse slaughter houses here in the United States, we are still apart of the problem.
The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals says horses are shipped off to Mexico and Canada to be slaughtered for human consumption. They get there in crowded trailers, without food, water or rest. Some of them don’t even make the trip.
It’s not pretty. They are in there for hours and hours, day or night, hot or cold, doesn’t matter.
Some horses from this last auction are sick, injured and malnourished.
It’s hard when they are sitting on the holding lot and they are sick and it’s hard to do anything about it. So for us to get them here, we can focus on them individually to get them better so we can get them a really good home.
All Seated in a Barn still needs help covering the costs of the horses and donkeys they recently rescued. To make a donation, you can head over to their GoFundMe page or their website.
