The City Council has approved the purchase and installation of ShotSpotter technology.

The system uses microphones to detect any gunshots within 15 yards of the device.

A captain with the Bakersfield Police said the device will be installed in a specific area in east Bakersfield. Last year, the area was responsible for 26 percent of all the shootings in Bakersfield.

Police expect the technology to help them respond more quickly to the scene of a shooting.

ShotSpotter is expected to be installed in the next three to four months.
